About Lake Bled

Tourist destination famous for its lush scenery, Lake Bled is set in the Julian Alps, mere 35 km away from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana.

The lake is of glacial and tectonic origin and it measures 2,120 m long, 1,380 m wide, and 29.5 m deep. In the summer, the water reaches 25°C, but during winter the lake often freezes, and is used for ice skating.

The town was first mentioned in 1004, and has since then developed into a popular health resort and tourist destination. Bled is located in the southern part of the Julian Alps, near the border with Austria. This proximity is visible in the architecture style, but also in the culture and gastronomy

First mentioned in 1011, Bled Castle is the oldest and most visited castle in Slovenia. It was built on a precipice above the city, overlooking the lake, offering amazing views. The oldest part of the castle is the Romanesque tower, but other towers and fortifications were added or improved in the middle ages. The castle is arranged around 2 courtyards, and has a wine cellar, restaurant, café, 2 museums and a chapel from the 16th century with restored illusionist frescoes. The castle also has a drawbridge over a moat.

On of Bled’s main attraction, the island can be reached by a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat called Pletna. To arrive at the top, where the church is located there are 99 steps. The 17th century pilgrimage church was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is decorated with Gothic frescos. Its tower is 52 meters high and it is believed ringing the bell upon entering the church brings good luck to visitors.

The Island and the church are open all year round and weddings are frequent during the summer. Tradition says that the groom must carry his bride up the 99 steps to reach the church, ring the bell and make a wish for good luck! All the while, the bride must remain silent.

Bled has a mild climate and has always been know as a health resort. It offers a wide range of sports activities such as golf, fishing, and horseback-riding and it is also a starting point for mountain treks and hikes, leading to Slovenia’s most popular National Park: Triglav.
